I. Pollution-aware route planning for EPFL community (HOMES x Campus Motion)
During this project, you are expected to:
Explore and analyze air pollution map
Propose link utilities and evaluation metrics for pollution-aware routing
Work closely with Campus Motion to develop routing scenarios
Testify and iteratively improve routing algorithms
We currently offer several semester projects and freelance collaborations combining engineering, sports sciences, and digital technologies.
Current navigation apps (such as Google Maps) generally recommend walking and jogging routes based on distance and elevation, without taking into account potential exposure to air pollution along the route. In collaboration with HOMES, and building on the high-resolution air pollution map they developed, this project aims to propose a routing algorithm that balances route length, directness, and cumulative exposure to air pollution, and then test it in everyday walking and jogging scenarios within the EPFL community.
To promote sport and well-being at EPFL, Campus Motion plans to install a batch of info boxes on campus with the objective of maximizing students’ attention and engagement. The location design can be formulated as a classic operations research problem named facility location problem (FLP), while the possibility of periodically changing the location of info boxes based on the collected user data adds additional complexity yet potential to continuously optimize the design. Supervised by HOMES, this project aims to formulate a customized FLP problem and propose adaptive relocation strategies.
II. Stationary and mobile info-box location design on EPFL campus (HOMES x Campus Motion)
During this project, you are expected to:
Learn the baseline FLP and solution approach
Formulate customized FLP problem based on EPFL campus layout and activities
Propose adaptive relocation strategies
Demonstrate through simulations and/or real data
